Increasingly in society technology is becoming more and more of an immersive experience for the users. With break troughs such as virtual reality headsets and larger phone screens all seeking to create a much more immersive experience for the user.

Here we can see the interactivity in action. The user is given a choice between getting the character to destroy the computer or hit the desk

Storytelling has begun utilizing these technologies also to attempt and create more immersive storytelling experiences old style media is considered to be a passive user experience where as new media is considered to have a more interactive user experience. Examples of these interactive technologies can be seen everywhere. One example of these interactive storytelling techniques can be found in the Netflix Series “Black Mirror Bandersnatch”. This series takes the interactive nature of the “choose your own adventure book” and reimagines it as a television show. The interactivity is participatory in nature the user follows the story of one character during the episode and will be given a decision to make on the characters behalf, the decisions that are made impact the narrative of the character during the episode, this creates a more interactive and immersive experience for the user as it causes the user to act on the characters behalf therefore investing the user in the character further.

Different types of devices can be used for viewing this television series. Netflix is a platform available on many different platforms: Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop or Television. This “gameificiation” was very useful as I found personally from viewing “Bandersnatch” on Netflix because I was making the decisions on behalf of the character I invested in it further as my actions themselves were effecting the character in front of me adding an additional level of excitement during viewing. It is clear that adding additional interactive elements into narratives can benefit storytelling as it will further help to captivate the user.
