The internet as we see it in modern society has revolutionized how narratives are told. Modern storytelling techniques have created a more complete immersive experience for the consumer. These new digital storytelling techniques seek to create a much more complex and vast world around them. Take for example the Harry Potter Universe which was examined in class. With the addition of “Pottermore” the online media platform for Harry Potter fans, the expansion of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise as well as author J.K. Rowling giving a further insight into characters on Twitter. This concept is known as “Digital Breadcrumbs”. Giving the consumer a further insight into the characters and the world that surrounds them.
In the past features such as this were less common and many “old” style narratives would rely less on modern tools such as this. However we see the benefits of doing this within the Marvel movie franchise. Initially Marvel created stand-alone movies such as “The Fantastic Four”, “The Hulk” and “Spider-Man” with great success however it was only with the addition of Transmedia Storytelling did the franchise enter a different stratosphere. By intertwining all the marvel movies together to tell a larger story involving all the superheroes and with the addition of television programmes this served to create a vast expansive universe which in turn creates a more immersive experience for the user. Henry Jenkins defines transmedia storytelling as a process “where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience”. This is true in the case of the marvel universe. Each Marvel movie adds a different piece of the puzzle which ultimately comes together in Marvel’s The Avengers when all the superheroes come together and also with the additions of the television shows this creates a much more rounded and immersive experience for the user.
It is clear that the Transmedia Storytelling Model has worked well for Marvel as the Original Spider-Man movie grossed $821,708,551 worldwide but with the introduction of Transmedia Storytelling model the latest Marvel which included this grossed $2,048,359,754 which is 1.2 billion dollars more than the original Spider-man. The introduction of Transmedia Storytelling has clearly become very lucrative for Marvel. Transmedia Storytelling can be beneficial for Marvel as some people who are more invested in certain characters such as Iron Man or Thor may have to watch all the prerequisites to further enhance the appreciation for the characters that they enjoy. Therefore it is clear that Transmedia Storytelling has had a large impact on the movie business as well as how people consume these narratives or stories.
